December Updates
Writing:
We have been working on our animal reports!
Here is some of what we've learned, so far:
**taking notes using the FQR format (fact-question-response)
**writing rough drafts of our introductions, main idea sections, and conclusions
**deciding where we can include our own thoughts/feelings/connections
**beginning to revise our rough drafts (adding sensory words and "vivid" verbs)
Look for more information regarding reports to come home before our winter vacation. At this point, this has been a CLASS assignment.
Science:
We're learning about magnets. We will explore the properties of magnets. (Do magnets attract all metal objects? How do magnets behave with each other?)
Spelling:
Look for spelling practice activities to return after the break...
**Don't forget: our field trip/class party will be on Friday, December 17.

Marble Maze
I've added a link with a video clip showing a marble maze. Of course, yours does NOT need to be this elaborate! Your maze can be made on a poster board using flexible straws, if you like.

Updates
Spelling:
Look for the new spelling list in your child's homework folder. The practice assignments will be due on Friday, November 5. The test will be that day, as well. This list focuses on spelling words with the short'i' sound and the long 'i' sound.
Writer's Workshop:
Last week, we learned about alliteration and sensory details. This week, we will focus on incorporating "sentence variety strategies" into our narratives. Today, students were asked to respond to a prompt in a 45-minute time frame. The children were given a topic and then asked to plan, write and revise a story based on that prompt. Practicing prompts like these will help prepare us all for the Writing FCAT in March.
Science:
Our next unit will be all about MOTION. This week, we will go on a scavenger hunt around the school to look for items that require a "push" or a "pull" in order to set the object in motion.
Other:
**Don't forget to turn in the permission slips for our upcoming field trips! The symphony form is due by tomorrow. The deadline for the Black Stallion slip and money ($13) is Friday, October 29, at 9 am.
**Bring in picture $ or return your pictures, please!!
Let's have a great week!!

More September Updates
Writer's Workshop: After spending the first few weeks mastering rituals and routines, we are now busy working on personal narratives. We are using a story map (that includes the elements of a narrative) as a graphic organizer for planning. We are also learning about the steps in the writing process.
Science: We are learning about SOUND! Students enjoyed making a "straw kazoo" and listening to the changes in pitch as we made the kazoos shorter. We've also covered textbook pages 407-415. Students should review these pages, along with the vocabulary from the lessons and their "review worksheets" to prepare for the upcoming Science test.
**Sound Assessment--Tuesday, September 21**
I look forward to seeing everyone at our Open House on Thursday evening!!
